Protesters in Suleja, Niger State, including community leaders, students’ union members and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have protested against the proposed development of a market on land earmarked for the Suleja campus of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU).

The protesters, led by members of the Suleja Development Association (SUDA), converged on the university’s Field Base site on Thursday, September 24, carrying placards and calling on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to halt the proposed development and preserve the property for educational purposes.

The protest follows the state government’s earlier agreement with Nigerian Army Properties Ltd. (NAPL) for the development of a market in Suleja. The government announced the ₦121 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NAPL in March, describing the proposed market as a major commercial project for the area.

SUDA Opposes Proposed Conversion

Reading a statement on behalf of the protesters, SUDA President, Mohammed Ishaq, represented by Prof. Sulieman Dangana Abdul, said the Suleja Emirate opposed the reported plan to use the Field Base for the proposed market.

Abdul said the Field Base had historical significance to Suleja, having served as an operational base for the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) during the development of Abuja. According to accounts cited by SUDA and historical reports, the property was formally handed over to the Niger State Government and Suleja Local Government Council on October 30, 2007.

He said the property was subsequently allocated to IBB University for the establishment of a campus in Suleja, a development that was welcomed by residents because it expanded access to tertiary education.

The university had also previously taken steps to develop the Suleja property. A 2014 development notice from IBB University described the 46.47-hectare property, formerly known as Suleja Field Base, as land intended for an executive education campus.

Abdul said the community was therefore concerned about the reported change in the use of the property.

“The establishment of a university campus at the site was warmly welcomed by the people of Suleja, as it expanded educational opportunities for the community and aligned with the expectations of the people regarding the property’s intended use.”

He argued that decisions concerning the Field Base should take into account its history and the expectations of the Suleja community.

Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over Market Project

Also speaking, a stakeholder and town planner, TP Umar Shuaibu, said Suleja already had several markets, some of which he alleged were underutilised.

He cited the Suleja International Market at Rafin-Sanyi, Muhammad Auwal Ibrahim Market near Maje and another modern market under construction around Madalla.

Shuaibu urged the state government to prioritise infrastructure and educational development at the university site rather than proceed with the proposed commercial development.

“Suleja Emirate is the only urban centre in Niger State that is lacking any single tertiary institution,” he said, adding that IBB University had already commenced some courses and programmes at the site.

SUDA also alleged that it had made several attempts to secure an audience with the governor to discuss the matter but had not received the response it sought.

However, the development comes against the background of a September 9 meeting between the Niger State Government and Suleja stakeholders, where further consultations were reportedly agreed on issues surrounding the proposed Field Base market, including the portion of land involved, project design, expected benefits and security implications.

SUDA subsequently expressed concern that, despite the consultations, it remained opposed to the reported change of use of the property and claimed it had not been adequately involved in the discussions.

The association also alleged that the state government had directed occupants of the Field Base to vacate the premises to make way for the proposed development. That claim has not been independently established in the sources reviewed.

Protesters Give Government Two Weeks

At the end of the protest, the stakeholders called on the Niger State Government to reverse the reported decision and maintain the property for educational purposes.

They gave the government a two-week ultimatum to address their concerns, warning that they would pursue legal avenues if the matter was not resolved.

SUDA Public Relations Officer, Shuaibu Umar, said the association had attempted to resolve the matter through dialogue but was prepared to seek legal redress.

He said the association had issued a 30-day pre-hearing notice to the state government, alleging that the government failed to respond within the stipulated period.

SUDA said it remained committed to peaceful engagement but insisted that any decision concerning the Field Base should involve proper consultation with the Suleja community and take into consideration the property’s educational history and previous allocation to IBB University.

The Niger State Government has not, in the reports reviewed for this story, publicly announced a reversal of the market project. Its earlier engagement with Suleja stakeholders, however, resulted in an agreement for further consultations on the proposed development.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the temporary unavailability of its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) due to technical challenges associated with the platform’s hosting arrangements.

The Board disclosed this in a notice to candidates, tertiary institutions and other users of the CAPS platform, assuring them that efforts are underway to restore the system to full functionality.

According to JAMB, it has commenced intensive engagement with the organisation responsible for hosting the platform to address the technical issues and resolve the disruption as quickly as possible.

CAPS Disruption Affects Admission Activities

The temporary outage comes at a critical period of the admission exercise, when candidates and institutions rely on CAPS for various admission-related activities, including checking and processing admission status.

JAMB acknowledged the importance of the platform to candidates and institutions, particularly at this stage of the admission process, and expressed regret over the inconvenience the disruption may cause.

JAMB Promises Further Updates

The Board assured candidates, institutions and other CAPS users that it is working to resolve the problem and restore access to the platform.

JAMB also said it would provide further updates as developments unfold, urging affected users to remain patient and await official information from the Board.

The disruption means candidates who are currently unable to access CAPS may need to wait until the platform is restored before carrying out activities that require access to the system.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal) results. The Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, announced them at a press briefing at NECO headquarters in Minna on Thursday, 24 September 2026, 63 days after the last paper. Results had been loading on the portal since 22 September.

Out of 1,371,992 candidates who sat the exam, 804,948 (58.67%) obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics. That is slightly below the 60.26% recorded in 2025. Counting credits in any subjects, 1,162,118 candidates (84.70%) crossed the five-credit mark.

Malpractice falls by nearly two-thirds

NECO recorded 1,406 malpractice cases in 2026, down from 3,878 in 2025 and 10,094 in 2024. The Registrar credited the security agencies deployed to examination centres, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services, for enforcing discipline and protecting the credibility of the exam.

The 334 candidates with special needs who sat the exam include those with hearing and visual impairments, albinism, autism and low vision.

What the numbers mean for admission

Five credits including English and Mathematics is the benchmark most universities, polytechnics and colleges of education use for admission, so the 58.67% figure is the one that counts for JAMB and post-UTME screening. Just under six in ten candidates met it. The gap between that figure and the 84.70% who got five credits in any subjects shows English and Mathematics are still where most candidates fall short.

If you did not make the five-credit mark, the 2026 NECO SSCE External (GCE) is open for registration until 26 October 2026 at ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng, and JAMB accepts results from two sittings for admission.

How to check your 2026 NECO result

1. Go to the official portal at results.neco.gov.ng. Note the “s” in results; the old result.neco.gov.ng address no longer works.
2. Select 2026 as the examination year.
3. Select SSCE Internal as the examination type.
4. Enter your NECO registration number (8 digits and 2 letters).
5. Enter your result-checking token. On the portal it costs ₦2,000 plus payment charges; buy only from NECO or an authorised vendor.
6. Click Check Result, then save or print the page.

One token checks one candidate’s result up to five times. If the portal is slow in the first days after release, that is traffic, not a faulty token; try again off-peak. Do not pay anyone offering “early” or “upgraded” results. NECO warns every year that these are scams.

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued seven people, including six students of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) and a commercial driver, after they were abducted by armed assailants in Katsina State.

The victims were rescued following a military response to a distress call over an attack on a commercial vehicle travelling from Kaduna to Katsina along the Daye–Malumfashi road in Danmusa Local Government Area.

The Deputy Director of Information, Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Monday.

Troops Respond to Distress Call

Osoba said troops received the distress call on the evening of September 21, 2026, reporting that armed assailants had attacked the vehicle and abducted its occupants.

According to him, the troops swiftly mobilised to the area and their intervention forced the kidnappers to abandon the victims and flee. He said all seven victims were subsequently rescued unhurt.

“Following the preliminary security profiling and necessary medical evaluations, the rescued individuals were safely handed over to designated officials to facilitate their safe reunion with their families and school authorities,” Osoba said.

Victims Undergo Security Checks

The rescued students and the driver were subjected to preliminary security profiling and medical evaluation after their recovery, according to the military.

The measures were carried out before the victims were handed over to designated officials for further coordination with their families and the university authorities.

The incident comes amid continuing military operations against kidnapping and other forms of criminal activity across the North-West.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA Intensifies Operations

Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA has continued operations against armed groups in Katsina and neighbouring states. In May, troops reported engagements with terrorists in Dutsin-Ma and other areas of Katsina, alongside operations in Zamfara State.

The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti (FUTES-IYIN), has warned students against indecent dressing.

The university said it would maintain standards on discipline, decent dressing and good moral conduct.

Earlier, Kewulere commended the university management for promoting good character, discipline and inclusiveness. He said the delegation visited to strengthen its relationship with the institution.

The League also sought areas of mutual support, particularly in promoting responsible conduct among students.

Kewulere urged the university to sustain its standards on dressing and character development.

He also called for a communication channel between the institution and the Muslim community.

According to him, such a channel would facilitate regular engagement between both sides.

The delegation also offered prayers for the Vice-Chancellor and his management team.

The prayers sought guidance, wisdom and protection as the university pursues its development objectives.

The League further prayed for the institution’s contribution to the educational and socio-economic development of Ekiti State and Nigeria.
