American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (EGLS) is designed for international students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the USA, supporting those committed to positive civic and social change with the goal of empowering them to return to their home countries and improve underserved communities.
The scholarship, hosted by American University in Washington, DC, USA, is available for any undergraduate program at the university. The program includes two full scholarships covering all billable expenses (tuition, room and board) and up to eight partial scholarships worth up to $40,000 annually.
The scholarships are renewable for up to four years based on satisfactory academic performance. However, they do not cover non-billable expenses such as health insurance, books, airline tickets, and miscellaneous costs (approximately $4,000). This scholarship is open to international students who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or dual citizens of the U.S. and another country.

Scholarship Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent (or rank in the top 10% of their graduating class) for grades 9–12.
- Demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, community service, and dedication to addressing the needs of their home country.
- Meet one of the following English language proficiency scores:
95+ TOEFL iBT (minimum 20 on all subscores)
7.0+ IELTS (minimum 6.0 on all subscores)
33+ SAT Reading subscore
29+ ACT English subscore
65+ PTE
125+ Duolingo (minimum 115 on all subscores)
Cambridge Assessment English score of 185+ (minimum 169 on all subscores - Graduate from secondary/high school by June 2025.
- Students in the IB system must complete a full IB diploma with at least three HL subjects.
- Students in the British A-Levels system must complete at least three A-Levels and 13 years of study by August 2025.
Note: You are NOT eligible if:
- You are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.
- You are enrolled in or have started post-secondary studies at another university.
- You graduated secondary school before 2023.
Application Instructions
To apply, complete the following steps by December 1, 2024:
- Submit the AU EGLS application.
- Complete the Common or Coalition Application and the international admissions process.
- Apply for Regular Decision for Fall 2025 (Early Decision and Early Action applications are not eligible).
