The 2024/2025 OVERSEAS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR UNIVERSITIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, FRANCE, AND MALAYSIA is currently open.

The closing date for the application is Monday, March 18^th, 2024 (Six weeks from the date of this publication).

The PTDF (Petroleum Technology Development Fund) scholarship is among the highest-paid scholarships available to Nigerian students. Hence, don’t miss out on the opportunity to apply for the scholarship program.

PTDF operates as a government-owned subsidiary of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources. Its legal mandate is to advance and promote petroleum technology.

Similarly, it was created to meet the oil and gas sector’s demand for trained personnel by funding academic study and providing professional development opportunities for Nigerians in relevant fields such as Engineering, Environmental Studies, Energy Studies, and Geological Sciences.

PTDF Scholarship Scheme for Undergraduates and Postgraduates

There are two categories available in this scholarship scheme: Local or In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS) and Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS).

Note: Only postgraduate candidates are eligible for overseas scholarships; undergraduate candidates can receive funding for study or awarded scholarships in any PTDF-approved Nigerian Federal Universities. Again, the scholarship will be awarded with restrictions to the course of study (available on the PTDF website).

PTDF In-Country Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Master’s & Ph.D.) Scholarship Scheme

This scholarship scheme is for Nigerian Undergraduate and Postgraduate students in any of the PTDF-approved Nigerian Federal Universities. Click here to see the list of all PTDF-approved In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS) Universities.

Applicants are to please note the following:

1. Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) before applying for the scholarship. Applicants are to note that they will be required to verify their NIN before proceeding with the application (NIMC verification charges apply).
2. Applicants who have benefitted from any of the PTDF scholarships in the past cannot apply for the same or lower category of degree.
3. Applicants who are beneficiaries of any other scholarship need not apply.
4. Application is restricted to Federal Universities and for specific courses only.
5. All applicants must possess a valid admission letter from the University.
6. Postgraduate applicant’s admission letter should be within a validity period of 12 months.
7. Postgraduate applicants who meet the requirements shall be shortlisted for interviews before the final selection of successful candidates.
8. Undergraduate applicants must have completed their first year and are currently in their second year of studies.
9. Only undergraduate applicants undertaking studies in oil and gas-related fields (as advertised) will be considered. The final selection shall be based on grades on their transcripts (transcripts must be signed and stamped by the HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff).
10. Admission for part-time studies shall not be considered for all categories of applications. The scholarship is highly competitive and merit driven. Selection of candidates shall be based on equitable representation of the 36 States of the Federation and FCT.

Criteria, Requirements and Selection Process for PTDF In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS)

The PTDF scholarship is highly competitive, and only the most qualified applicants will be selected. A selection panel will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria:

1. Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired, and relevant publications to be referenced by applicants.
2. Undergraduate and Postgraduate (MSc) applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose stating the reason(s) they wish to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and its expected impact on national development.
3. Ph.D. applicants are required to submit a research proposal of not more than Six (6) pages, including topic, introduction, literature review, research question(s), novelty, methodology, mode of data collection(s), expected outcome(s), relevance to the industry, and appropriate references.
4. Membership of professional bodies.
5. The viability of the study/research plan (Ph.D. applicants only).

PTDF In-Country Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme

This scholarship scheme is for Nigerian Undergraduates who are currently in the 200-level at any of the PTDF-approved Nigerian Federal Universities. However, 300-level students may also try their luck, as there is nothing to lose.

Value/Worth of Scholarship/Inclusions: ₦250,000 annually + Laptop (to be given at first payment only).

Scholarship Duration: The Scholarship award is renewed annually until the completion of the undergraduate program, provided the student’s CGPA doesn’t fall below the required minimum CGPA.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Applicants must be full-time students in any of the PTDF-approved Federal Universities.
2. Applicants must be in their second year of study.
3. Applicants’ course of study should be related to the oil and gas industry as advertised.
4. Applicants must possess Five (5) credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO, including English Language and Mathematics.
5. Applicants should provide their transcripts for the first year of study (transcripts must be signed and stamped by the HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff).
6. Applicants must possess a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a scale of 5.00 or 3.0 on a scale of 4.00, which is equivalent to 2.1 in their first year.
7. Applicants admitted into the University through Direct Entry, i.e., 200-level, must have either of the following:
   • • Minimum of Upper Credit at the Diploma level.
     • Minimum of Ten (10) points in the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (I.J.M.B.) examination.
     • Minimum of Eight (8) points at the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.).

Note: Undergraduate applicants who meet the above requirements are to upload the following documents [Some of them are optional, but ensure you have all of them for your own good]:

1. Evidence of statement of WAEC/SSCE/NECO results with at least Five (5) credits, including English Language and Mathematics (not more than two (2) sittings, and the first sitting result must be uploaded) and/or any other required results.
2. Letter of admission into the University.
3. First-year academic transcript(s) duly signed and stamped by HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff.
4. Certificate of indigeneship (evidence of state of origin and local government).
5. Personal statement of a minimum of 1000 words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study.
6. Local Government of Origin Identification Letter.
7. School Identification Card.
8. Most recent passport not less than three months (must be in JPG format).
9. Birth Certificate or its equivalent.

How to Apply for PTDF In-Country Undergraduate Scholarship

PTDF authorities will send a pin to the host departments in the various PTDF-approved Universities. Depending on your school, you are expected to go to the host department and collect your application pin. In most cases, the HOD of the host department will be the one to attend to you. OR

You can purchase a scratch card from designated main branches of First Bank of Nigeria Plc in all 36 States and FCT upon payment of a NON-REFUNDABLE amount as stated by PTDF. Instructions on how to access the form online are clearly stated on the backside of the cards. OR

However, by now, you are expected to have confirmed that your CGPA is 3.0 or higher.

Once you’ve completed the application successfully, you’ll have to wait patiently for the list of shortlisted candidates to be published in your school; that is, the list of students invited to take the exam.

The next list of winning names will be released after that. If your name appears on this final list, congratulations! You have been awarded the scholarship.

PTDF In-Country Postgraduate (master’s & Ph.D.) Scholarship Scheme

This scholarship scheme is for Nigerian Postgraduate (master’s & Ph.D.) students in any of the PTDF-approved Nigerian Federal Universities.

Master’s or MSc Eligibility Requirements:

1. Applicants must possess full-time admission letter into any of the PTDF-approved Federal Universities.
2. A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an oil and gas related field or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with a minimum working experience of Two (2) years in the oil and gas industry.
3. Applicants’ course of study should be related to the oil and gas industry.
4. Applicants must possess at least Five (5) credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (not more than Two (2) sittings, and the two results must precede the first degree).
5. National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption.
6. Certificate of indigeneship (evidence of state of origin and local government).
7. Personal statement of a minimum of 1000 words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study.

Ph.D. Eligibility Requirements:

1. Applicants must possess full-time admission letter into any of the PTDF-approved Federal Universities.
2. A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an oil and gas related field or a Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree with a minimum working experience of Two (2) years in the oil and gas industry.
3. A minimum of Merit in a second-degree certificate in an oil and gas related discipline.
4. Applicants possess at least Five (5) credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (not more than Two (2) sittings, and the two results must precede the first degree).
5. National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption.
6. Certificate of indigeneship (evidence of state of origin and local government).
7. The Research Area must be relevant to the oil and gas industry.
8. Ph.D. research proposal of not more than Six (6) pages. The proposal template can be accessed via the applicants’ profile on the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal.

Applicants are advised to scan copies of the following documents and attach them to their online application forms [All documents must be in pdf except your passport picture and must be in the right file sizes as indicated in the portal]:

1. First Degree Certificates or Statement of Results.
2. NYSC Discharge Certificate or Letter of exemption.
3. WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO Result(s) and the PINs on the application forms to enable PTDF to view the O’level results on the relevant website [and/or any other required results].
4. Admission Letter.
5. Personal Statement.
6. Certificate of indigeneship (evidence of state of origin and local government).
7. Recent passport photograph.
8. Master’s Degree Certificate/Second Degree Certificate or Statement of Results (for Ph.D. applicants only).

10. Evidence of membership in any professional association.
11. Local Government of Origin Identification Letter.
12. School Identification Card.

PTDF Overseas Postgraduate (Master’s & Ph.D.) Scholarship Scheme

This scholarship scheme is for qualified Nigerian graduates who want to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at any PTDF partner universities overseas. Click here to see the list of all PTDF-approved Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS) Universities.

The scheme was developed to provide candidates with an excellent opportunity to benefit from a diverse reservoir of knowledge and utilize the top-notch facilities offered by world-class institutions worldwide.

Under the scheme, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at partner institutions.

Value/Worth of Scholarship/Inclusions: 

1. Provision of flight tickets,
2. Payment of health insurance,
3. Payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable),
4. Provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses.
5. Language classes; to enable the candidate to adapt well to the new environment (depending on the country).

Note: Applicants for the Overseas Scholarship Scheme must have the following:

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (USA).
2. G.R.E. (Graduate Record Examination) (USA).
3. GMAT – for management-related courses (USA).
4. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (UK).

Selection Process, Criteria & Requirements for PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS)

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive, and only outstanding candidates across the board are selected.

Now, based on the submitted qualifications, the top applicants for each category from each state will be invited for an interview where a selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria:

1. Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts and other professional qualifications acquired.
2. Relevant publications referenced by the applicant (Ph.D. applicants only).
3. The viability of the study/research plan.
4. Membership in professional bodies.

Master’s or MSc Eligibility Requirements:

1. A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience.
2. Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
3. Must be computer literate.
4. Possession of Five (5) O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
5. Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry and its expected impact on national development.

Ph.D. Eligibility Requirements:

1. Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
2. Must be computer literate.
3. A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good second-degree certificate.
4. All lecturers must produce a letter from their Vice Chancellors confirming that they are not in receipt of any other scholarships (if shortlisted).
5. A research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than Five (5) pages) to include the following:
   • • • Title
       • Introduction
       • Research Problem
       • Aim
       • Research Questions/Objectives
       • Scope
       • Summarized Literature
       • Methodology
       • Expected outcomes only where necessary
6. Possession of master’s degree project.
7. Possess a valid admission letter.

2. Applications are limited to PTDF partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Malaysia, and Brazil, where it feels the scholarship’s high standards can be maintained and the scheme’s objectives will be best served.

4. The scholarship is limited to PTDF partner universities in PTDF partner schools.
5. Scholarships will only be awarded for studies relevant to PTDF’s mandate; candidates may be disqualified for applying for programmes not relevant to the oil and gas industry.
6. The proposed course of study must also be related to previous studies.
7. Candidates with multiple applications will be disqualified.
8. Candidates who successfully scale through the first round of screening will be requested to submit their transcripts; all applicants are therefore advised to prepare their transcripts for submission in anticipation of such a request.
9. Candidates who have benefitted from any of the PTDF scholarships in the past cannot apply for the same category of degree except a higher degree.
10. Candidates interested in German Institutions should choose Abuja as their preferred interview location.
11. Candidates who are beneficiaries of any other scholarship need not apply.
12. Ongoing Ph.D. Applicants could only apply provided their Universities are among the list of PTDF partner universities. However, the PTDF award will be effective at a stated time.
13. The duration of the Ph.D. award is limited to a maximum of Thirty-six (36) months only.
