FUGA New Vice-Chancellor Outlined Agenda for Institutional Growth

The Federal University Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State has entered a new administrative chapter. Professor Yaqub Geidam officially assumed office as the institution’s fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor. He immediately unveiled plans to consolidate existing achievements. His vision also includes repositioning the university for academic excellence, research growth, and infrastructural development.

Appointment Backed by Due Process

The Governing Council approved Geidam’s appointment during a statutory meeting. The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ibrahim Usman, presided over the session . Consequently, the selection followed strict legal guidelines.

According to a statement signed by the Head of the Information and Protocol Unit, Mallam Adamu Saleh, “the appointment followed a rigorous, merit-based selection process conducted in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other extant regulations.” This legal framework remains the benchmark for VC appointments nationwide . Moreover, federal guidelines require candidates to possess at least ten years’ experience as a professor . Geidam surpasses this threshold with over two decades.

A Ceremony of Transition and Unity

The handover ceremony occurred on Wednesday at the university’s 1,000-capacity lecture hall. Principal officers, deans, directors, heads of departments, staff, and students witnessed the event. Dignitaries from across the academic community also attended .

Delivering his acceptance speech, Geidam expressed gratitude. “I am grateful for the trust placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with this office. Together, we will build on the solid foundation already laid and move this university to greater heights,” he said.

Earlier, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimuna Waziri, addressed the gathering. She thanked the university community for their cooperation during her tenure. She then formally handed over the instruments of office to Geidam. This act symbolised the completion of her leadership journey. She urged staff and students to extend the same support to her successor.

A Scholar of Repute at the Helm

Geidam brings formidable credentials to his new role. He is a professor of Veterinary Medicine with over two decades of experience. Before this appointment, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maiduguri. Additionally, he has held several other key administrative positions .

His scholarly record includes numerous publications in reputable journals. His leadership style is widely described as inclusive and results-oriented . Therefore, the Governing Council expressed confidence in his capacity to strengthen the university’s core mandates.

A Clear Agenda for Institutional Growth

The new Vice-Chancellor outlined his priority areas with precision. His goals include strengthening academic standards. He also aims to promote research and innovation. Furthermore, enhancing staff welfare is central to his plan. He is equally committed to improving infrastructure. Overall institutional growth remains his overarching objective.

“I call on all stakeholders to work collectively in unity and dedication to move this university to greater heights,” he further stated .

Thus, Geidam assumes leadership at a pivotal moment. The university community now watches with anticipation. His task is to translate vision into measurable impact.
