Temporary Admission Halt for 2026/2027
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has announced a temporary pause in MBBS admissions. Specifically, the decision affects only the 2026/2027 academic session. Importantly, the university stressed that the programme is not discontinued.
In an official notice dated February 3, 2026, FUTA addressed prospective candidates. The notice was signed by the Registrar, C.O. Adeleye. Accordingly, candidates who selected FUTA for MBBS were advised to choose alternative institutions.
Meanwhile, the announcement sparked concern among applicants and parents. Some initially feared the medical programme had been suspended entirely. However, the university quickly moved to clarify the situation.
University Dismisses Discontinuation Claims
FUTA firmly rejected claims that the MBBS programme was scrapped. The university stated that the programme remains fully operational.
According to the clarification, the MBBS programme is “intact, up and running, and has not been suspended or put in abeyance in any way or form.”
Furthermore, FUTA explained that the decision is strategic and time-bound. It applies strictly to one academic session. Therefore, normal admissions will resume afterward.
Reason Behind the One-Session Suspension
In a detailed press statement, FUTA explained the rationale for the pause. The statement was issued by Adegbenro Adebanjo of the Directorate of Corporate Communication and Protocol.
“The suspension of admission into the programme for the 2026/2027 academic session (one session only) is to engender a seamless academic calendar and facilitate hitch-free clinical training,” the university stated.
Consequently, the focus is on improving training quality for existing students. The move also addresses clinical and operational logistics.
“Any information contrary to the above, especially insinuations about the discontinuation of the programme, is false, misleading, and completely at variance with the reality on the ground.”
Teaching Hospital and Stakeholder Support
Meanwhile, FUTA confirmed continued collaboration with its Teaching Hospital. This partnership ensures uninterrupted clinical training for current students.
Notably, the Teaching Hospital was established through broad collaboration. Stakeholders included the federal and Ondo State governments. Traditional institutions and other partners were also involved.
The university expressed appreciation to key contributors. These include President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Others named were Professor Mohammed Ali Pate and Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR). Elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti was also acknowledged.
Additionally, FUTA commended the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka.
Assurance to Prospective Candidates
Finally, FUTA advised candidates to adjust their JAMB choices promptly. This guidance aims to prevent admission complications.
Nevertheless, the university reassured the public of its long-term commitment. Admissions into the MBBS programme will resume in the next session.
“FUTA remains committed to the training and production of critical manpower for national well-being and development through its medical programmes,” the statement added.
Overall, the clarification seeks to calm public anxiety. It underscores that the pause is a strategic reset, not an ending.
