The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has released a shocking list of 203 tertiary institutions that failed to upload their students’ data for the 2024/2025 student loan application exercise, a critical requirement for Nigerian students to benefit from the government’s newly introduced loan scheme.
In a statement issued late Friday by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications, the Fund announced that the Student Loan Application System (SLAS) portal will reopen for 48 hours only, to allow defaulting schools to comply.
According to the statement,
“The portal will be accessible from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025, to 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.”
NELFUND clarified that the brief extension aims to
“ensure that all eligible students are duly captured and verified by their respective institutions as part of the ongoing 2024/2025 NELFUND loan application process.”
However, the Fund warned sternly that institutions failing to comply within this final window risk severe consequences:
“Institutions are strongly advised to make full use of this final opportunity. Failure to complete the verification process within the stipulated period will result in the affected institutions forfeiting participation in the current loan cycle, a situation that will, regrettably, disadvantage their students who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the loan scheme.”
A Long List of Institutional Defaults
The published list cuts across federal, state, and private universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, schools of health technology, and specialized institutions across the federation.
It includes some of Nigeria’s most prominent and long-established tertiary institutions — a development that has left many stakeholders questioning administrative efficiency and institutional accountability.

Education, Accountability, and the Cost of Negligence
For thousands of students awaiting access to this loan scheme, this is more than an administrative delay—it is a potential derailment of their academic dreams.
NELFUND’s warning leaves no room for ambiguity: institutions that fail to comply within this final 48-hour window will forfeit their participation, effectively locking out their students from the 2024/2025 NELFUND loan cycle.
The development also raises broader concerns about institutional readiness, digital compliance, and education governance in Nigeria.
While the Fund’s move aims at transparency and fairness, students from affected schools may face another academic year burdened by uncertainty, financial hardship, and dashed hopes.
