Students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, will now enjoy improved academic and practical training facilities. This follows the inauguration of key infrastructure projects by Sheriff Oborevwori on Saturday.
The projects were unveiled during the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony. They are designed to deepen practical learning, expand research capacity, and promote innovation. Importantly, the facilities target science, computing, engineering, environmental studies, and medical sciences.
Modern Laboratories and Specialised Complexes
To begin with, the governor commissioned modern science laboratories. He also inaugurated a Faculty of Computing Complex.
In addition, the Pa James Odhokpa Izomor Engineering Workshops were unveiled. The facility is a suite of 10 fully equipped workshops. It was donated by Engineer Godwin Izomor in honour of his late father.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Medical Sciences Building was commissioned. New male and female hostels were also opened to address accommodation needs.
These projects align with national goals of strengthening science and technical education. They also reflect growing investment in skills-based university training across Nigeria.
Governor Praises Rapid Growth and Private Support
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori expressed appreciation to God for the milestone and commended the University for its Rapid Development within a relatively short period.
He disclosed that the day’s activities commenced before 9 a.m. with the commissioning of laboratories and workshops for the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Computing Complex.
The governor described the engineering workshops, built through private initiative in memory of Pa James Izomor, as a noteworthy investment in education and human capital development. He praised the donor family for prioritising educational advancement.
Moreover, Oborevwori also lauded the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Oboreh, the Governing Council, and the management for prudent utilisation of the university’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which he said had translated into visible infrastructural growth.
His remarks underscore the state government’s emphasis on partnerships. Increasingly, public-private collaboration is seen as vital to sustainable university development.
University Management Highlights Cost Efficiency
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Oboreh disclosed that several of the projects were executed through internally generated revenue and direct labour, a strategy he said ensured cost efficiency and quality delivery.
According to him, this approach reduced unnecessary spending. At the same time, it maintained high construction standards.
Consequently, the institution achieved faster project completion. It also strengthened accountability in financial management.
Strengthening Tertiary Education in Delta State
Overall, the newly inaugurated projects mark a significant phase in the university’s development and underscore the Delta State Government’s commitment to strengthening tertiary education.
With these additions, Southern Delta University is consolidating its position as a growing centre for academic excellence and skills-driven learning in the state.
Going forward, the upgraded facilities are expected to improve student outcomes. They will also enhance research output and industry relevance.
