Two passengers abducted by gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State have escaped from their abductors. They are now safely with the police. Security agencies intensify efforts to rescue others still held. The Benue State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday. They added that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Ambush Disrupts UTME Journey
The victims were among passengers attacked on Wednesday evening. A Benue Links bus was ambushed along the Benue Burnt Bricks axis in Otukpo Local Government Area. Police spokesperson Udeme Edet said investigations identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Benue Links. Tactical teams, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed to track the abductors.
Eyewitnesses said the bus carried about 18 passengers. It was intercepted around 8 p.m. Attackers robbed occupants before taking them into the bush. Two persons, including the driver, initially escaped. Authorities have since clarified that not all passengers on board were UTME candidates. Many were young people travelling to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Yet some reports noted not everyone on board sat for the exam.
Tactical Teams Deployed for Rescue
“The Command has deployed several tactical teams and is working with other agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims,” she said.
Police confirmed that 14 passengers were abducted during the attack. Security operatives continue search operations in surrounding forests. They work with other agencies to locate the remaining victims. However, the operation remains intense and ongoing.
Driver Held for Policy Violation
Meanwhile, the police and the management of Benue Links have both confirmed that the driver is in custody. He violated company policy by embarking on an unauthorised night journey. The company’s General Manager, Alexander Fanafa, said the driver picked up passengers after official hours without a formal manifest. This exposed them to risk.
Outrage Grows Over Student Targeting
The abduction has drawn widespread concern. The North Central Development Commission condemned the incident. It called for the immediate release of the victims. Families of some abducted persons have raised alarm. One family reported two teenage brothers travelling for the examination were among those taken.
Governor Hyacinth Alia also expressed outrage. He described the act as reprehensible. “The targeting of innocent citizens, particularly students on their way to sit for examinations, is unacceptable and stands against every norm of humanity and civil order,” Alia said.
Authorities maintain that efforts are underway. They aim to rescue the remaining victims and bring those responsible to justice. Yet the incident highlights persistent security challenges along key roads in Benue State. Officials urge stricter adherence to safety protocols for public transport. Families await positive updates with growing anxiety.
