Ceremony Marks Start of 2025 Academic Year
The American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, has officially opened its 2025 academic year with a matriculation ceremony attended by faculty members, parents, and newly admitted students.
In his address, AUN President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, stressed the role of education in shaping the future in an era of global uncertainty. He underscored the need for “critical thinking, creativity, and empathy” in “tackling pressing issues facing society.”
Dr. Frazier also called on students to see education as a tool for service, urging them to “engage with their communities, understand their needs, and contribute positively.”
Personal Touch: A Taste of Nigeria
The highlight of the president’s remarks came when he shared a personal story about adapting to Nigerian culture through food. He recalled discovering Jollof Spaghetti and confessed his love for Suya, describing it as one of his favorite Nigerian dishes.
Encouraging students to embrace diversity, he said they should “try different foods, learn about other cultures, and build relationships with their classmates from diverse backgrounds.”
According to him, the AUN community now draws students from over 16 different countries. He said, that the school have at least a student from nearly every state in Nigeria. Thus, offering a unique opportunity for cultural exchange.
Building a Legacy of Values
The president reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to character formation, emphasizing “the importance of embracing the values of integrity, respect, and responsibility.” He assured the new students, “I pledge to support you on your academic journey.”
He further congratulated the freshmen, welcoming them into “a legacy built on the foundations of knowledge, service, and leadership.”
Looking ahead, Frazier added: “As the students embark on their academic journey, they are encouraged to make a significant impact, not only within Nigeria but also across the globe. With the support of the university’s faculty and staff, the students are well-equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow and shape a future that reflects their highest aspirations and values.”
