Bayero University Kano continues to strengthen its position among Nigeria’s leading institutions. The Vice Chancellor has praised alumni contributions while outlining ambitious expansion plans. Moreover, infrastructure upgrades and welfare initiatives are transforming the academic landscape.
Alumni Philanthropy Reaches ₦5 Million Milestone
The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Haruna Musa, recently commended the institution’s Class of 1992. He praised their “uninterrupted 10-year tradition” of philanthropy at the group’s 33rd Anniversary celebration.
During the dinner and 10th reunion event, the alumni donated ₦5 million. The funds were directed to the university’s Indigent Students’ Account. Professor Musa emphasized that such partnerships remain vital for BUK’s strategic growth.
Furthermore, the forum’s Chairman, Muhammad Dahiru Sa’ad, highlighted their decade of service. The group has assisted hospitals and supported late colleagues’ widows. Additionally, they have aided former lecturers over the years.
Recently, the forum helped several medical students return to school. These students had been suspended due to unpaid fees. Consequently, their intervention prevented permanent dropouts.
Global Ambitions: Racing Toward Top 500 Status
Professor Musa outlined his vision during the anniversary event. He aims to propel BUK into the top 500 universities globally. The university has already made significant strides in international rankings.
The 2026 World University Rankings by Times Higher Education ranked BUK within the 1001-1200 band globally and as the 3rd best university in Nigeria. Notably, the institution also emerged as the premier university in Northern Nigeria.
BUK recorded the best performance in international outlook among Nigerian institutions in the assessment. The ranking evaluated 2,191 universities across 115 countries. It measured performance across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
Additionally, Sa’ad praised Professor Musa for securing strategic partnerships. These include a ₦60 million scholarship deal with a fintech company. The Vice Chancellor also established agricultural mechanization research partnerships with Chinese institutions.
Infrastructure Transformation and Energy Independence
To address operational challenges, Professor Musa announced major advancements. The Rural Electrification Agency has commenced work on campus. A 3.5-megawatt solar plant upgrade is currently underway.
Plans are in place to scale capacity further. The university aims to reach 6MW of solar power capacity. This will significantly enhance energy independence on campus.
Furthermore, collaboration with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria has yielded results. The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria announced plans to finance the construction of student hostels and staff quarters for university workers through partnerships with universities. BUK has secured a site for 500 housing units for staff members.
Student Welfare and Academic Integrity Measures
The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct. This covers cultism and examination malpractice. He also flagged the misuse of ICT facilities on campus.
Accordingly, Professor Musa directed university management to take action. They must sensitize students on the ethical use of technology. This initiative aims to maintain academic standards.
Moreover, an endowment fund will be launched in 2026. Professor Attahiru Jega will chair this initiative. The fund will support underprivileged students financially.
However, the University Senate has approved a new policy. Students unable to afford registration fees can suspend their studies. This ensures they do not drop out entirely from the system.
Those affected can access alternative support mechanisms. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund provides one option. Additionally, students can take up part-time campus jobs to fund their education.
Distinguished Alumni Honored at Anniversary Ceremony
The anniversary festivities included multiple events. A medical outreach took place at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. This provided healthcare services to the community.
An awards ceremony followed the medical outreach. Professor Musa received recognition for his contributions to BUK’s development. Several other distinguished alumni were also honoured at the event.
The honourees represented diverse professional fields. They included academics, public officers, and security personnel. Corporate executives and politicians were also recognized for their achievements.
Among the distinguished recipients were several professors. These included Prof. Amina Sani Mu’azu, Prof. M.A. Suwaid, and Prof. Hajara Umar Sanda. Prof. Hannatu Sabo Hadejia and Prof. Baffa Adamu Gwaram also received awards.
Security personnel honoured included senior commissioners of police. CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, CP Ali Umar Fagge, and CP Ibrahim Maikaba received recognition. CIS Hussain Ibrahim was also among the awardees.
Diplomatic and corporate leaders featured prominently on the list. Amb. Yakubu Abdullahi Ahmad and Amb. Musa Sani Nuhu were recognized. Engr. Ibrahim Sani Abdul and Dr. Bello Lawal Dambatta received awards as well.
Additionally, several community leaders were honoured for their contributions. These included Alh. Muhammad Aliyu Wudil and Alh. Rabi’u Musa Dambatta. Others were Alh. Al-Amin Ibrahim, Alh. Kabiru Yuguda, and Alh. Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa.
The list also featured Alh. Umar Sanda Kuso and Pastor Clement Oniwanye. Yushau Shuaib Idiagbon completed the roster of distinguished honourees. Their collective achievements demonstrate the impact of BUK graduates across sectors.

Professor Haruna Musa, a Professor of Polymer Chemistry and current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), was appointed as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, for a single term of five years with effect from August 18, 2025.
His administration continues to prioritize multiple strategic areas. These include research excellence, infrastructure development, and student welfare. International partnerships remain central to the university’s growth strategy.
