Broadening Educational Reach Across Nigeria
The Federal Ministry of Education has officially rolled out its Inspire Live(s)! Online Real-Time Classes Initiative nationwide. According to a statement signed by Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the programme is “designed to expand equitable access to quality learning for every Nigerian child,” aligning closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
This new initiative is a strategic response to long-standing issues in the education sector, including teacher shortages and repeated disruptions to learning. By harnessing technology, the ministry aims to bridge these gaps through live, interactive lessons streamed directly to students.
How the Programme Works
Classes are streamed live, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m., for Junior Secondary (JSS) and Senior Secondary (SSS) students.
These lessons are delivered by certified master teachers, using the Cisco Webex platform.
For JSS students, the subject list includes Basic Science, Mathematics, English Language, ICT, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, French, Physical Education, Religious Studies, History, and Business Studies.
For SSS students, available subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing/Catering Craft, Civic Education, and Automobile Mechanics.
Scaling Nationwide: From Primary to Senior Secondary
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, confirmed “full implementation … with expansion set to cover all classes from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary 3.” This means that, although the platform currently supports mainly secondary students, primary students will also be included soon.
To ensure smooth nationwide adoption, the ministry has asked States’ Commissioners for Education to:
1. Nominate a State Focal Officer to coordinate Inspire Live(s) activities;
2. Circulate programme details to all public and private school principals;
3. Ensure designated schools have basic ICT facilities and reliable internet connectivity;
4. Oversee registration, which is “strictly … to be conducted by school principals via the Inspire support channels.”
Crucially, the initiative is open to all public and private schools—not just government institutions.
Context: A Bigger Push Toward Digital Education
The Inspire Live(s) rollout comes amid broader efforts to digitise Nigeria’s education system. In October 2025, the government launched a Digitalisation of Public Schools Initiative, distributing over 1,000 interactive smart boards and pushing AI, EdTech, and digital literacy across curricula. Minister Alausa emphasized that this shift “symbolised a move from one-way teaching to interactive, technology-driven learning.”
Conclusion
This ambitious Inspire Live(s)! initiative could be a game-changer for education in Nigeria. By making real-time, high-quality teaching accessible across the country regardless of a child’s location or school type—it truly has the potential to democratise education.
But, as with all large-scale reforms, the success of this programme will depend on execution: Are the states going to provide the necessary infrastructure? Will schools genuinely have the internet and ICT capacity? Will the quality of teaching sustain at scale?
For me, this is a promising step in the right direction. If implemented well, it could significantly reduce educational inequality in Nigeria. But it will require ongoing commitment, monitoring, and investment.
