MDCN Approval Unlocks Global Recognition
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to the School of Health Sciences at Federal University of Technology, Akure, marking a decisive step toward the establishment of its proposed teaching hospital. The approval followed an assessment visit conducted on April 22 by an MDCN team led by Deputy Registrar Nnameka Nwakanma.
As a result, FUTA’s College of Medicine is now set to gain international visibility, as it will be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. This development is expected to open global opportunities for graduates, especially in terms of further training and professional mobility. In addition, the council approved an annual admission quota of 100 students for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, further strengthening the university’s capacity to train future medical professionals.
NUC Backing Strengthens Programme Credibility
This milestone comes shortly after the National Universities Commission granted full accreditation to FUTA’s Medicine and Surgery programme earlier in April, following a successful resource verification exercise. Together, both approvals significantly boost the credibility of the programme and signal its readiness for full-scale academic and clinical training.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Community Central Planning Committee on the Establishment of FUTA Teaching Hospital described the dual approvals as a landmark achievement, noting that they reflect years of sustained advocacy, planning, and institutional commitment.
Community Effort Drives Breakthrough
The statement, signed by Tope Fayehun, chairman of the committee’s media and publicity sub-committee, underscored the importance of collective effort in achieving the milestone. It stressed that the development would not only enhance healthcare education but also improve service delivery across Ondo State and beyond.
“This accreditation not only strengthens FUTA and the Teaching Hospital’s role as a beacon of medical excellence but also reaffirms Akure’s commitment to advancing national healthcare. The Committee remains dedicated to supporting the University and Hospital’s growth and invites all stakeholders to join in celebrating this shared victory,” the statement read in part.
Moreover, the committee expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, noting that federal approval played a crucial role in advancing the initiative. It also acknowledged the contributions of prominent Akure leader Reuben Fasoranti, alongside several other individuals who provided critical support at various stages of the project.
Among those recognised were Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, Senator Niyi Adegbonmire, and Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu, who provided accommodation for pioneer clinical students. The committee also commended Olumide Origunloye, Chief Leke Adedipe, Prince Akinwunmi Falodun, and Taiye James for their roles, while diaspora groups such as Oyemekun International Club (USA) and Akure and Friends (Chicago, USA) were praised for their contributions.
Further acknowledgements went to Hon. Omolade Oluwateru, Kolawole Atandeyi, Stephen Abitogun, Dapo Ajayi, Gbenga Fasua, Funmilayo Adekanye, and Adekunle Michael, among others. Friends of Akure, including Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, and Hon. Abiola Makinde, were also commended for their support.
Leadership and Royal Support Applauded
The committee equally praised its chairman, Dr Olufemi Oyinsan, for coordinating efforts that led to the accreditation, while also recognising the contributions of members such as Kehinde Ige, Deji Adegoroye, and Ayo Ajayi. In addition, it saluted the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for his royal guidance and consistent support throughout the process.
Pathway to Teaching Hospital Take-Off
Overall, the accreditation reinforces FUTA’s emergence as a growing hub for medical education and strengthens Akure’s contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare development. However, the committee maintained that efforts are still ongoing, as it reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the successful take-off of the proposed teaching hospital. It also urged stakeholders to sustain their support in order to maintain the current momentum and bring the vision fully to life.
