NOUN CGPA Calculator and Grading System

NOUN grades on a 5-point scale: 70 percent and above is an A worth 5 points, 60 to 69 a B worth 4, down to an F below 40 worth 0. GPA is the sum of grade point × credit units divided by total credit units; CGPA is the same across every semester. Pass mark 40 percent (50 for Nursing and postgraduate).

Each course score is 30 percent TMAs and 70 percent exam, so both feed the grade point.

How a course score is built

Your three TMAs together carry 30 percent and the exam carries 70 percent. A student who averages 80 on the TMAs and scores 55 in the exam finishes on (80 × 0.3) + (55 × 0.7) = 24 + 38.5 = 62.5, a B. Skip the TMAs and the same exam score becomes 38.5, an F. That is why the TMA guide matters as much as the past questions.

Worked example: one semester

GPA = 30 ÷ 12 = 2.50. The failed course still counts its 3 units in the denominator, which is what drags the average down. To update a CGPA, add this semester’s 30 points and 12 units to your previous totals: a student with 3.20 over 48 units (153.6 points) moves to (153.6 + 30) ÷ (48 + 12) = 3.06.

NOUN follows the NUC 5-point classification used by Nigerian universities.

What you need to graduate

From NOUN’s official FAQ, a student is eligible to graduate only after all of the following:

• A minimum Total Credit Earned of 120 units for students who entered at 100 level, or 80 units for direct-entry students.
• Every core course passed, plus at least one elective per semester.
• At least eight semesters in residence from 100 level, or six semesters for direct entry.
• A CGPA of at least 1.00 for undergraduate programmes and 2.00 for postgraduate programmes.

Three things students get wrong about NOUN CGPA

• “My CGPA keeps changing.” It is recalculated after every result release and can rise, fall or hold, depending on that semester’s grades. That is normal.
• “A failed course disappears when I pass it.” No. NOUN’s FAQ says a failed course stays on your statement of results permanently, even after you pass it at a resit. The pass is added; the fail is not erased.
• “Nursing passes at 40.” Nursing programmes and all postgraduate programmes need 50 percent to pass, so a score of 45 is a fail there.

How do I calculate my NOUN CGPA?

What CGPA is First Class in NOUN?

4.50 and above on the 5-point scale. Second Class Upper starts at 3.50 and Second Class Lower at 2.40.

What is the NOUN pass mark?

40 percent (grade E) for most undergraduate programmes; 50 percent for Nursing and for all postgraduate programmes.

How much does TMA contribute to my grade?
