NOUN TMA Explained: How Tutor-Marked Assignments Are Scored

A NOUN TMA (Tutor-Marked Assignment) is an online test on elearn.nou.edu.ng. Every course has three, taken in order, and together they are 30 percent of your final grade; the exam is the other 70. Miss them and you need 58 percent in the exam alone to pass a course that needs 40.

Where TMAs live

TMAs are not on the student portal where you pay fees. They sit on the eLearn portal, a Moodle site at elearn.nou.edu.ng, under each course you registered. A course shows up there within two working days of registering it on nouonline.nou.edu.ng. If it has not appeared after that, raise an e-ticket under E-learn Portal on support.nou.edu.ng or email lcms@noun.edu.ng. Login details and password resets are in the NOUN student portal guide.

How TMAs are scored

NOUN’s official FAQ states it plainly: TMA scores contribute 30 percent and examination scores 70 percent. Each TMA is marked automatically; the three scores are averaged and scaled to 30.

The pass mark is 40 for most undergraduate courses and 50 for Nursing and postgraduate courses. Grade points and class of degree are on the NOUN CGPA calculator.

How to take a TMA

1. Log in to elearn.nou.edu.ng and open the course.
2. Read the course material first. TMA questions are drawn from the study units, and the material is free on nou.edu.ng/e-courseware.
3. Open Tutor Marked Assignment 1 (TMA1), answer every question and submit. Only after TMA1 is submitted does TMA2 open, then TMA3.
4. Check your score through the open-book grades icon in the left sidebar of the course.

2026_2 TMA windows

Each window is about two weeks and there is no make-up window once it closes. Because courses appear on eLearn only after course registration, registering late in the 22 June to 5 October window can mean the TMA1 window has already passed. Register early; the course registration guide has the sequence.

Common mistakes

• Registering courses after the TMA window opens. The course is not on eLearn until two working days after registration, and closed windows do not reopen.
• Attempting the TMA before reading the unit. The questions are objective and come straight from the course material.
• Assuming TMAs are optional because the exam is bigger. They are worth up to 30 marks; the exam alone can only get you to 70.
• Using the wrong login. eLearn has its own password, separate from the student portal and the support portal.
• Waiting until the last day. eLearn slows down as a window closes. Submit early in the window.

About “TMA answers” websites

Sites and WhatsApp groups sell NOUN TMA answers. Copying them is examination malpractice under NOUN’s rules, and it also does you no favours: the TMAs are 30 marks of a course whose exam, worth 70, tests the same material. Students who work through the TMAs honestly tend to do better in the exam because that is the revision. Use the free course material and the past questions instead.
