American Open University Nigeria (A-Global) has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence three postgraduate programmes, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic expansion. Consequently, the university will admit its first cohort of master’s degree students during the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval strengthens A-Global’s postgraduate portfolio and reflects the Commission’s assessment that the institution has met the requirements for running the newly approved programmes.
According to the university, the approval was conveyed in a letter dated June 19, 2026, from the Office of the Executive Secretary of the NUC. The letter was signed by the Commission’s Director of Academic Planning, Mr. Abubakar M. Girei.
The university explained that the approval followed a comprehensive resource verification exercise conducted by an NUC panel. The exercise assessed the institution’s human and material resources before recommending the programmes for approval.
NUC Gives Green Light to Three Master’s Programmes
The Commission approved three full-time postgraduate programmes:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA).
- Master of Information Technology (MIT).
- Master of Public Administration (MPA).
Resource verification is a mandatory quality assurance process conducted by the NUC before new academic programmes are introduced. During the exercise, the Commission evaluates staffing, learning facilities, academic resources and governance structures to ensure institutions meet the required standards.
Reacting to the approval, the Founder and President of American Open University Nigeria, Prof. David S. Akanbi, described the development as recognition of the university’s commitment to academic excellence.
“This approval is the outcome of a rigorous, independent examination of what we have built, our faculty, our facilities, our systems, and our academic governance. We are grateful to the Commission for its thoroughness and for the confidence this approval represents.”
Furthermore, Prof. Akanbi said artificial intelligence was deliberately integrated into every programme instead of being treated as a separate subject.
“We believe AI is not a feature to be bolted onto traditional curricula. It is a force reshaping how organisations decide, deliver, govern and compete. Our programmes are designed accordingly, with AI integrated into every course and three signature specialisations in each programme that prepare graduates to lead in the domains where AI is advancing fastest.”
University Embeds Artificial Intelligence Across All Courses
The university said each programme was designed to prepare graduates for leadership roles in an increasingly AI-driven world.
The MBA programme offers specialisations in Technology Entrepreneurship, Human Capital Development and Strategic Educational Design.
Likewise, the MIT programme features AI Engineering and Deployment, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, and Intelligent Learning Systems.
Meanwhile, the MPA programme includes Digital Governance and Security, Public Health Policy and System Governance, as well as Strategic Public Sector Leadership.
In addition, A-Global said all three programmes are built around its proprietary EDGE Framework which stands for Educate, Develop, Grow and Empower.
The university added that teaching will follow a HyFlex learning model. Therefore, students can study fully online, fully on campus or through a combination of both.
A-Global Eyes AI Leadership as Admissions Open
Prof. Akanbi expressed confidence that the programmes would equip graduates with the expertise needed to drive AI-powered transformation across business, technology and public sector institutions.
“These are master’s programmes designed to stand alongside any in the world and to graduate global leaders. Our graduates will leave A-Global ready to lead AI-driven transformation in their organisations and communities, with the strategic tools, technical depth, professional networks and applied research capability the moment demands.”
Meanwhile, the university announced that applications for the 2026/2027 academic session have commenced. Interested applicants can obtain admission requirements and application procedures through the Office of the Registrar and the institution’s official website.

The institution says it is committed to expanding access to career-focused higher education through flexible, industry-aligned teaching and learning.
