President Bola Tinubu has appointed Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, ending months of speculation over who would succeed Ishaq Oloyede.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Aina will formally take over after Oloyede’s tenure expires on July 31, 2026.
Oloyede Leaves a Legacy of Reform
Aina inherits a board that underwent major reforms under Oloyede’s leadership. Since assuming office in 2016, Oloyede oversaw sweeping changes in JAMB’s operations, finances, and examination processes.
Within a few years, the board recorded unprecedented financial growth. Government remittances increased significantly, while JAMB also funded several infrastructure and capacity-development projects from internally generated revenue.
Consequently, the incoming registrar faces the task of sustaining and expanding reforms that transformed the examination body into one of Nigeria’s most financially accountable public institutions.
Who Is Professor Segun Aina?
According to the Presidency, “Professor Aina, who will be 40 in July, is a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform.”
A Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Aina has built a reputation in technology-driven institutional transformation and examination system modernization.
His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from University of Kent.
- Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security from Loughborough University.
- Doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.
- Senior Management Programme certification from Lagos Business School.
In addition, he is a registered engineer and a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.
Experience in Examination Administration
Beyond academia, Aina brings more than 15 years of experience in digital transformation, public-sector reforms, and institutional system design. He has advised both federal and state governments on technology deployment and operational efficiency.
Furthermore, he has served as a consultant to major examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, where he provided expertise on ICT infrastructure, examination integrity, and process optimization.
Notably, the Presidency said Aina’s relationship with JAMB began during his National Youth Service, an experience that reportedly shaped his later contributions to examination reform and systems optimization.
Youngest Registrar in JAMB’s History
At 39, Aina became one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering. His latest appointment also makes him the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu expressed confidence in the new appointee’s ability to build on the achievements of his predecessor.
The Presidency stated that the President expects Aina to deploy “his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight” to advance the board’s operations and take the institution “beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor.”
With a background that combines engineering, technology policy, and examination management, Aina is expected to steer JAMB through its next phase of digital innovation and institutional growth.
