The University of Ibadan (UI) has opened an alternative admission pathway for qualified candidates seeking to earn degrees from the institution. The opportunity is available through the university’s Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) programme.
The initiative is particularly targeted at candidates who participated in the UI Post-UTME but could not secure conventional admission.
According to the university, such candidates may now switch to the ODeL mode and pursue their degree without being limited by available physical spaces on campus.
Special Admission Window Closes August 15
The special application window for the 2025/2026 academic session will close on August 15, 2026. Classes for the special cohort are expected to begin on August 17, 2026. Director of the UI Distance Learning Centre (DLC), Prof. Olufade Onifade, disclosed the development. He explained that candidates who sat for the 2026 UI Post-UTME can change their mode of study at no cost.
The offer, therefore, provides another opportunity for qualified candidates who missed out on conventional admission.
“Candidates who took the 2026 UI Post-UTME qualify for the free change-of-mode offer. Such candidates are required to visit the official change-of-mode application portal to switch their mode of study from the conventional on-campus option to the ODeL programme.
“Other interested and qualified candidates may submit a fresh application for the special cohort. With the August 15 deadline fast approaching, the university encourages qualified candidates to act immediately, as available slots are expected to fill up quickly,” he said.
How the UI ODeL Programme Works
Meanwhile, the ODeL programme offers students a flexible alternative to traditional classroom-based learning. Through the programme, students can attend virtual classes and access course materials remotely.
They can also use mobile learning platforms and participate in scheduled physical revision sessions. Importantly, the courses are taught by the university’s faculty members.
This means ODeL students receive instruction from the same academic system serving conventional students.
Onifade said: “The UI-ODeL programme provides flexible virtual classes, mobile learning, interactive course materials and physical revision sessions. Courses are taught by the same faculty lecturers who handle conventional programmes, and learners graduate with the same prestigious University of Ibadan degree.” The programme therefore allows students to study with greater flexibility while working towards a University of Ibadan degree.
Courses Available Through ODeL
Furthermore, the university offers undergraduate programmes across several academic disciplines through the ODeL route.
The programmes cover areas including science, social sciences, arts, education and related fields.
Available courses include B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Statistics and B.Sc. Psychology. Others are B.Sc. Economics, B.Sc. Political Science and B.Sc. Sociology.
Candidates can also apply for B.A. English and B.A. Communication and Language Arts. In addition, the programme includes B.Ed. Educational Management and B.Sw. Social Work, among others.
Consequently, candidates who could not obtain conventional admission have another route into the university.
Candidates Urged to Apply Before Deadline
The university has consequently urged interested candidates to take advantage of the opportunity before the August 15 deadline. Candidates who participated in the 2026 UI Post-UTME can use the free change-of-mode option.
However, candidates who did not participate in the Post-UTME may apply afresh if they meet the requirements. The special cohort is expected to commence classes on August 17.
Therefore, prospective applicants are advised to complete their applications early. The university has also cautioned that available spaces may become limited as the deadline approaches.
