The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has intensified efforts to reposition itself globally. It appointed three internationally respected scholars as Visiting Professors.
The appointments were approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya. They were communicated through official letters dated December 18, 2025. Each letter was duly signed by the Vice-Chancellor.
According to the letters, the appointments involve teaching, research collaboration, mentorship, and strategic academic engagement.
The initiative reflects a deliberate push to align UNN with top global universities.
Adichie’s Appointment Signals Renewal in Arts and Humanities
Renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was appointed as a Visiting Professor.
The University said the decision was based on her global literary influence. She is widely recognised as one of the most influential writers of her generation.
Her works have shaped global conversations on literature, culture, and identity. UNN noted that her appointment will significantly enrich the arts and humanities.
This will be achieved through lectures, scholarly engagements, and mentorship.
Students and early-career academics are expected to gain direct intellectual exposure.
AfDB Economist Urama Strengthens Policy and Development Studies
Also appointed is Prof. Kevin Chika Urama, an executive at the African Development Bank.
He is a respected authority in development economics and climate policy. The University cited his expertise in evidence-based policymaking.
His professional experience spans academia, policy formulation, and development finance. His engagement is expected to enhance teaching and research output.
It will also strengthen policy-oriented programmes. These efforts will focus on economics, development studies, and allied disciplines.
James Robinson Brings Global Political Economy Scholarship
Prof. James Robinson of the University of Chicago was also appointed. He is a leading political economist with global recognition. His work on institutions, governance, and economic development is widely cited.
It has influenced both academic research and public policy debates.
According to the appointment letter, his Visiting Professorship will deepen collaboration. It will also advance research partnerships.
Students and lecturers will gain exposure to cutting-edge global scholarship.
University Leadership Reaffirms Founding Vision
The Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, explained the broader intent.
He said the appointments align with the Vice-Chancellor’s reform agenda.
“The University of Nigeria was founded to be a globally competitive institution; the latest appointments represent a significant step towards reclaiming that legacy and enhancing its global relevance,” he said.
Inya explained that the Visiting Professorships promote knowledge exchange. They also strengthen international academic linkages. Importantly, they bridge theory, policy, and practice.
He added that the latest appointments raise the total to four in December 2025. According to him, the development underscores UNN’s renewed global ambition.
