The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). In addition, the council has fixed July 22 and July 23, 2026, for the conduct of a resit examination in Mathematics and English Studies for eligible candidates.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Azeez Sani.
More Than 186,000 Candidates Participated
According to the statement, a total of 186,291 candidates registered for the examination in 12 subjects.
The candidates were drawn from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries. The examination commenced on April 20 and ended successfully on April 30, 2026.
The BECE is the qualifying examination for students completing Junior Secondary School. Successful candidates are subsequently considered for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School One (SSS I).
Award Committee Approves Release of Results
The results were released following the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
The meeting was spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who was represented by the Director of Basic Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-David.
Also in attendance were secondary school principals from across the country and members of NECO’s management team.
Resit Examination for Candidates With Deficiencies
Meanwhile, the award committee approved July 22 and July 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE resit examination in Mathematics and English Studies.
Sani explained that the exercise was designed for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both.
The resit examination will give affected candidates another opportunity to address those deficiencies and meet the requirements for certification.
Opportunity to Progress Into Senior Secondary School
Furthermore, the NECO spokesman said the exercise would help eligible candidates secure the certification required for admission and placement into SSS I.
He noted that the resit examination would provide affected candidates with an opportunity to remedy the deficiencies and obtain the certification required for admission and placement into SSS I without repeating a full academic year.
The release of the results and the scheduling of the resit examination mark the final stages of the 2026 BECE cycle. More importantly, the arrangement offers eligible candidates a second chance to progress into senior secondary education without losing an academic session.
