The management of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, says the ongoing strike by the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) could soon be resolved following fresh intervention by the Ondo State Government.
The assurance was contained in an official statement issued by the university in response to reports that the Students’ Union Government (SUG) had given the state government a 72-hour ultimatum to end the industrial action.
The strike, which began on July 10, 2026, was declared over the non-payment of lecturers’ May and June salaries. Since then, academic activities have remained suspended while discussions continue to resolve the dispute.
Management Dismisses SUG Ultimatum
The statement, signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Sola Imoru, described the reported ultimatum as unnecessary.
According to the university, the Ondo State Government has already taken concrete steps to address the issues that led to the strike.
The statement partly reads: “Management considers the ultimatum unnecessary as the Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to the University, His Excellency, Hon. (Dr.) Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has already approved a special intervention fund to enable the University to meet its financial obligations.”
Management also disclosed that the process of releasing the approved funds is already underway. It added that the development had earlier been communicated to the Students’ Union leadership.
Students Asked to Remain Calm
Meanwhile, the university appealed to students to remain calm, patient, and law-abiding while the payment process is being completed.
Management expressed optimism that the intervention would bring the industrial dispute to a close and pave the way for the resumption of normal academic activities.
“Management, therefore, appeals to all students to remain calm and exercise patience while the payment processes initiated by the Visitor to the University are being concluded,” the statement noted
Dialogue Remains the Best Option
Furthermore, the university urged the Students’ Union leadership to seek clarification from management before making public statements on issues affecting the institution.
According to the statement, regular engagement and open communication remain essential to resolving concerns within the university community.
The statement further noted: “Management remains committed to constructive engagements and believes that dialogue is the most effective approach to resolving issues of mutual concern.”
The institution also reaffirmed its commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and sustained engagement with staff, students, and other stakeholders.
Strike Yet to Be Officially Suspended
Despite the optimism expressed by the university, the ASUU strike has not yet been officially suspended.
The union commenced the indefinite industrial action after lecturers were not paid their May and June 2026 salaries. However, the latest intervention by the Ondo State Government has raised hopes that the dispute may soon be resolved.
For now, students have been advised to rely on official university communication channels for updates on the suspension of the strike and the resumption of academic activities.
