Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has postponed the resumption of students and all academic activities. This includes the 140th Inaugural Lecture and ongoing examinations. While the university cites ongoing renovation works, this decision follows significant protests in the town over rampant kidnappings.
Official Statement on Postponement
The university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mrs. Eunice Eboiserehimen Omonzejie, approved the postponement. According to official spokesman Otunba Mike Aladenika, the move is to complete renovation projects. The goal is to enhance the teaching and learning environment.
In an official statement, Aladenika said, “this temporary adjustment will ultimately benefit our students.”. Consequently, he asked any students still in hostels to vacate immediately. New dates for lectures and examinations will be communicated later. The university is committed to providing a conducive environment for academic excellence.
Escalating Security Crisis in Ekpoma
However, this administrative decision follows a severe security crisis in Ekpoma. In fact, a massive protest against incessant kidnappings grounded commercial activities. Angry protesters, including students and residents, blocked the Federal Highway. They set bonfires to voice their frustration.
The Edo State Police Command reported a major rescue operation recently. Specifically, police used an Eagle Combat Drone Unit to locate a kidnappers’ camp. Nine kidnapped persons, including five children, were rescued unhurt. The police spokeswoman highlighted the “transformative role of technology in modern policing”.
Prior to the protest, the AAU Students’ Union Government (SUG) had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to security agencies. They demanded urgent action to secure Ekpoma and its surroundings.
University Denies Student Involvement in Protests
In a related development, the university management has disowned the protesters. The university claims those involved are not registered students. Officially, the university stated the individuals have “no affiliation with the university in any capacity.”.
The management condemns any attempt to disrupt the academic environment. They assured that unauthorized actions will be met with appropriate measures.
