CHPRBN Accredited Institutions in Nigeria: How to Check a School Before You Pay

CHPRBN-accredited institutions are the Colleges and Schools of Health Technology and the university teaching hospitals that the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria has approved to train JCHEW, CHEW and CHO students. The board publishes them by geopolitical zone on its official website, chprbn.gov.ng/institutions. Always confirm your school is on that list — or ask CHPRBN directly — before you pay any fee.

What CHPRBN is and what it accredits

CHPRBN stands for the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria. It is a federal regulatory body established by Decree 61 of 1992 (now CAP C19, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) and inaugurated in December 2000. Its job is to regulate the training, registration and licensing of community health workers in Nigeria.

The board accredits two kinds of training providers:

• Colleges and Schools of Health Technology — these train JCHEW and CHEW students (public and private).
• University teaching hospitals — these run the Community Health Officer (CHO) programme.

If a school is not accredited by CHPRBN, its certificate does not qualify you to register or write the board’s professional examination — no matter how genuine the school looks.

How to confirm a school is CHPRBN-accredited before you pay

Fake and unaccredited “colleges of health” that collect fees and issue worthless certificates are a real problem in Nigeria. Protect yourself with these steps before you pay any acceptance, tuition or “form” fee:

1. Check the board’s own list first. Match the school’s exact name and town against the CHPRBN Institutions directory. Watch for look-alike names that copy a genuine school.
2. Confirm directly with CHPRBN. Email info@chprbn.gov.ng or call the head office (see contacts below). Do not rely on the school’s own claim, a framed “certificate” on the wall, or a screenshot on WhatsApp.
3. Know the difference between approvals. Registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), or a state government “approval to operate”, is not the same as CHPRBN accreditation for community health training. Only CHPRBN accreditation lets you register and be licensed.
4. Be wary of pressure and cash-only demands. A school that exists mainly on social media, refuses to show current accreditation, or insists on full cash payment before you can verify anything, is a red flag.

If a school cannot show you where it appears on the CHPRBN list — and the board cannot confirm it — walk away.

Why B.Sc/HND Community Health graduates face a licensing question

This is one of the most searched questions on the topic, so here is the honest position. CHPRBN licenses practitioners trained through its own accredited JCHEW, CHEW and CHO programmes. A B.Sc in Community Health (or an HND) earned through a university or polytechnic route is a valid academic qualification, but it is not automatically one of the CHPRBN training routes, so it does not on its own confer a CHPRBN practising licence.

In December 2024, the Society of Community Health Technologists and Scientists of Nigeria (SCHTSN) publicly warned that adverts promising HND and B.Sc Community Health holders a quick CHPRBN “top-up” licence — circulated by a group calling itself the “Community Health Institute” — were misleading and should not be trusted. Separately, some community health experts have called for CHPRBN to create a recognised bridging or abridged programme for ND, HND and B.Sc holders, but that is a proposal under discussion, not a settled automatic pathway.

What this means for you: if you hold or are pursuing a B.Sc/HND in Community Health and want a CHPRBN licence, do not pay any “top-up” or “conversion” fee to a third party. Confirm the current, official route in writing directly from CHPRBN before parting with money.

Not automatically. Many Schools/Colleges of Health Technology are accredited, but some are not, and accreditation can lapse. Always confirm the specific school and programme on the CHPRBN list.
