Students of the School of Preliminary Studies (SPS), University of Ilorin, have praised the programme. They described it as a veritable route towards achieving their academic aims and objectives. They are poised to excel in the institution. Research confirms that remedial education significantly improves student outcomes. A recent study found that remediation increases graduation rates by 22.5 percentage points for some students .

A Foundation for Future Success

Hassan Shiyanbola, who intends to study Nursing Science, expressed confidence in his decision. “I feel very good actually. The feeling is like I made a good decision. I just need to put in more effort,” he said. His optimism extends beyond a single institution. “Even if I don’t get admitted into UNILORIN, I am at least 80 percent sure I will gain admission into another university because the university has provided me good foundation.”

Remedial courses prepare underprepared students for tertiary education . Therefore, this foundational support proves crucial. Samuel Kemi Blessing, aspiring to study Medicine and Surgery, agreed wholeheartedly. “The SPS is a good place. It helps us to study, build ourselves up, and prepare well for JAMB and admission into the University of Ilorin,” she stated.

Programme Structure Eases Academic Pressure

Opeyemi Adeogun Ridwan, an aspiring Political Science student, commended the unique assessment method. “The school has given us the best option by using our JAMB and remedial results. It is not stressful, and nothing should stop any student from excelling,” he remarked. He added confidently, “I am hoping to cross to the next level; there should not be any reason for me not to pass my examination.”

This dual-assessment approach appears to reduce student anxiety significantly. Abdulsalam Abubakar Sudaisi, who hopes to study Mass Communication, described the experience as rewarding. “The remedial programme has been wonderful. The school environment is okay, and with my little effort and God’s support, I shall cross to the next level,” he said.

Supportive Environment Enhances Learning

Many students credited the structured environment for their positive experiences. Adedeji Oyinkonsola Fidelia, desirous of studying Medicine and Surgery, explained the benefits clearly. “I wish to be a doctor. This remedial is okay because I feel better and have enough time to read. Attending lectures and studying together makes everything perfect for us,” she explained.

Peer support remains essential for effective remedial programs . Azeez Faishat Odunayo, intending to study Linguistics, shared his personal transformation. “At first, I was not happy about being here, but when I came, I started adapting and enjoying everything,” he noted.

Renewed Hope and Academic Readiness

In conclusion, the students agreed the programme has strengthened their academic foundation. It has provided an encouraging learning environment. It has also renewed their hope of gaining admission into desired courses. Remedial education corrects faulty study habits and raises general competence . For these UNILORIN students, the SPS represents more than preparation. It serves as their academic lifeline into higher education.
