Bayero University Kano (BUK) has launched an investigation into a student allegedly linked to an online fraud case involving a Nigerian academic in the United States.
The development follows claims by Farooq Kperogi, a journalism professor based in Atlanta, who said he was repeatedly deceived by someone posing as a female student from the university.
The case has triggered conversations on social media about ethics, online impersonation, and student accountability.
Professor Reveals Alleged Scam
Earlier, Kperogi detailed the alleged incident on his verified Facebook page. According to him, a person identified as Ismail Sani allegedly impersonated a student named Halima Tahir.
The individual reportedly contacted him several times and requested financial assistance. Kperogi explained that he initially believed the requests were genuine.
However, he later uncovered what he described as a fraudulent scheme. His online posts quickly gained traction. Consequently, the issue sparked widespread debate about the conduct of students in digital spaces.
University Begins Preliminary Inquiry
Reacting to the development, BUK confirmed that it had begun reviewing the matter.
In a statement issued by Lamara Garba, the Director of Public Affairs, the university emphasized its stance on discipline.
“The University takes any conduct capable of bringing its name into disrepute very seriously.” Garba also revealed that the institution had started preliminary checks.
“A preliminary inquiry has commenced to ascertain the facts. The appropriate authorities are reviewing the matter in line with university rules and disciplinary procedures.”
Institution Urges Public Patience
Furthermore, the university stressed that the alleged actions of individuals should not be seen as representing its values.
The statement emphasized that the actions of individual students do not reflect the values of the University.
He stressed that “We urge the public to allow the investigative process to take its course and refrain from spreading unverified information.”
BUK also acknowledged the role of individuals who support students financially.
“Professor Farooq Kperogi and others continue to provide assistance that helps students meet registration fees and other educational needs”.
Possible Disciplinary Measures
Meanwhile, the university assured that disciplinary action would follow if the allegations are proven.
Garba assured that, if the allegations are substantiated, “appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with University regulations and applicable laws.”
The institution further reiterated its commitment to discipline and due process.

Notably, BUK has previously taken strict action against misconduct, including expelling and sanctioning students for academic violations.
