Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and Nigeria’s premier institution, the University of Ibadan (UI), have both scored major recognition on the global stage. In the 2025 Top Scientists Network (TopSciNet) ranking, four FUOYE academics and several UI scholars were named among the world’s top two percent of scientists. This milestone not only underscores the research excellence emerging from these institutions but also signals a growing Nigerian presence in global knowledge production.
What the Top 2% List Represents
Each year TopSciNet compiles a global database of scientists whose research impact places them in the uppermost two percent of their fields. It draws on standardized metrics — including citation counts, h-index and productivity — to identify researchers whose work is widely used, referenced and built upon. Making the list is a sign of sustained influence, not just publication volume.
FUOYE’s Breakthrough
The four FUOYE academics named among the world’s top 2% for 2025 are:
1. Prof. Olayide Samuel Lawal (Rank 49,613): A renowned expert in industrial and macromolecular chemistry. e has produced high-impact studies on biopolymers and biomass valorisation that have earned him international citations and collaborations.
2. Dr. Adeolu Adesoji Adediran (181,175): An accomplished materials and metallurgical engineer. He bridges local Nigerian engineering challenges with global research trends, producing innovative and widely referenced work.
3. Prof. Bukola Olalekan Bolaji (204,476): A professor of mechanical and mechatronics engineering. He is known for his research into sustainable energy systems, refrigeration and thermofluids. His work has helped put FUOYE on the map for environmentally focused engineering studies.
4. Prof. Basiru Olaitan Ajiboye (357,325): A phytomedicine and molecular toxicology researcher. He investigates plant biochemistry and health applications, generating important findings in the field of natural products and toxicology.
UI’s Steady Strength
Well-known Nigerian names continue to appear on the list year after year:
- Prof. Oye Gureje (University of Ibadan): A globally recognised psychiatrist whose work on mental health and public policy has shaped both African and international discourse.
- Prof. Mayowa Owolabi (University of Ibadan): A neurologist celebrated for his groundbreaking work on stroke prevention and treatment.
- Prof. Shafiu Mohammed (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria): A respected voice in global health systems and policy.
