Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has launched a definitive 25-year strategic plan. This ambitious roadmap aims to transform it into a top-tier global institution. The plan was formally approved during a strategic retreat in Lagos.
Governing Council and management jointly resolved to guide FUOYE to 2050. Consequently, the university commits to a fundamental transformation. It will embrace digital innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.
A Vision for 2050: Digitally Empowered and Globally Connected
The retreat produced a clear, long-term vision. Participants unanimously agreed on a necessary institutional transition.
“The council and management resolved to work collaboratively to ensure that by 2050, FUOYE will stand among the world’s leading universities—digitally empowered, financially sustainable, ethically grounded and socially responsive”.
Therefore, the core mandate is explicit. FUOYE will deliberately transition into a digitally driven, entrepreneurially oriented and globally connected university over the next twenty-five years. This vision is the central pillar of the new strategic plan.
Financial Resilience Through Diversified Revenue
Achieving this vision requires financial sustainability. Currently, the university relies heavily on government funding. The new plan strategically addresses this.
The council and management agreed to strengthen financial sustainability and resilience through revenue diversification. This includes exploring multiple new income streams.
Specifically, the plan includes “endowments, alumni giving, public-private partnerships, grants and enterprise-based income streams while maintaining affordability and access”.
This diversified approach aims to build a robust economic foundation. Ultimately, it will fuel the university’s ambitious development goals.
Governance Reinvention and Leadership Continuity
Strong governance is essential for this journey. The retreat emphasized reinforcing institutional systems. Accordingly, new standards were established.
“Governance systems and processes shall be reinforced to ensure clear role delineation, transparency, accountability, ethical leadership and performance-based management across all levels of the university”.
Furthermore, proactive risk management is prioritized. Campus safety and institutional resilience will be integrated into all planning. This safeguards the university’s stability and reputation.
The leadership transition supports this stable governance. Outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, was commended for “commendable leadership”. His tenure saw significant milestones in academics and infrastructure.
Importantly, the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, was deeply involved in the plan’s creation. His appointment followed a fully digitalized and transparent process. This ensures continuity for effective implementation.
Strategic Foundation and Next Steps
The 25-year plan did not emerge overnight. It was built on prior collaborative work. For instance, a strategic workshop was held in March 2025. This event gathered stakeholders to draft the initial framework.
The resulting plan provides a “realistic, phased and costed roadmap”. With leadership aligned and a clear vision set, FUOYE now begins its long-term transformation. The focus shifts to execution and sustainable growth.
The university community anticipates this new chapter. Indeed, the journey to become a globally connected institution is now formally underway.
