The Niger State Government has authorized the immediate reopening of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, months after its closure due to deadly security breaches on campus.
Announced on Friday in Minna, the directive came via a statement from Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, following a comprehensive review of enhanced security protocols and infrastructural upgrades at the university.
“Following a detailed evaluation of current security arrangements and infrastructural improvements at IBBU, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has directed that the university be reopened with immediate effect,” the statement noted.
Furthermore, the SSG highlighted that the government, working in concert with security agencies, has instituted a fortified security framework to protect students, staff, and the broader academic community.
Additionally, Alhaji Usman reiterated the administration’s deep commitment to education and safety. He stated that Governor Bago remains steadfast in ensuring all state-run tertiary institutions operate without further interruptions.
“The wellbeing of our students and university staff is paramount. We will sustain monitoring and continue offering needed support,” he assured.
Moreover, he lauded the collective efforts of security personnel, university authorities, and community stakeholders in addressing the root causes of the shutdown.
Meanwhile, students and staff are advised to strictly adhere to newly introduced safety guidelines. They are expected to collaborate fully with university management to ensure a smooth transition back to academic life.
Notably, IBBU Lapai—named after former Head of State General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd)—was initially closed earlier this year due to multiple security lapses in the region.
Lastly, the official date for full academic resumption will be communicated soon by the university’s management.
