A storm has hit Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa State, after a shocking video of a violent clash between a lecturer and a female student exploded on social media.
The drama began when the lecturer accused the student of cheating. He then ordered her out of the exam hall. Witnesses say he (the lecturer) seized her phone, but in retaliation, the female student smashed the Lecturer’s phone. This move triggered a physical fight.
By Wednesday, the video had spread like wildfire across Bayelsa and beyond, dragging NDU into unwanted national headlines.
The Apology
Amid the uproar, a 300-level History and Diplomacy student, Favour, confessed to forwarding the clip to her class group. Favour admitted her role in fuelling the scandal and tendered her apology.
“I want to sincerely apologise for my role in the circulation of a video that has caused embarrassment to my department and the school,” she said in a contrite video.
“I did not record it, but forwarding it made it go viral. I regret it deeply. I’m sorry to the school, to my lecturers, and to my department. I promise to be more responsible.”
Her emotional apology, however, has not doused the questions swirling around the university: Why did a lecturer resort to violence? Why did a simple exam infraction turn into a public brawl? And why would a Student be so arrogant?
