Tragedy Strikes Ondo University: Two Freshmen Drown at Hotel Pool Party

Two newly matriculated students of Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko have died. The tragic incident occurred at a hotel swimming pool in the town. Both victims drowned during a pool party organized for fresh students.

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the deaths. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drownings.

First Victim Rescued, Dies Hours Later

The first incident happened on January 29, 2026. DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the state police spokesperson, provided details on Wednesday.

“On January 29, 2026, a report was received at the Akungba Divisional Police Headquarters from one Shittu, male, the pool manager of Unibercity Lounge and Hotel, Akungba-Akoko, regarding an unfortunate incident that occurred during a swimming pool party organised by the hotel for newly matriculated students,” he stated.

One Adegbola Blessing, aged 19, was found unconscious in the pool. The pool manager immediately rescued him and administered first aid.

“The victim reportedly regained consciousness, was able to stand, and was subsequently taken home by his friends,” the PPRO added.

However, tragedy struck the following morning. Blessing’s condition deteriorated overnight.

“Further developments occurred in the early hours of 30th January, 2026, at about 0700hrs, when the first victim, Adegbola Blessing, was reported to have also passed on,” the spokesperson disclosed.

 Second Student Dies at Hospital

Shortly after the first rescue, another student faced trouble. Oludere Opeyemi, aged 22, was also discovered unconscious.

“Shortly thereafter, another individual, Oludere Opeyemi, male, aged 22 years, was also discovered unconscious in the swimming pool. He was promptly rescued and rushed to the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel,” DSP Jimoh said.

Investigation Underway

Police have taken swift action in response. The hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, was invited for questioning. Similarly, the pool manager also faces interrogation.

The police spokesperson noted that the case had been transferred to the Command’s monitoring unit for further investigation.

Both victims’ remains have been deposited at the morgue. They are being preserved at the state hospital in Ikare-Akoko. Additionally, autopsies will be conducted to determine exact causes of death.

Safety Warning Issued

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has responded to the incident. He advised all hotel owners and operators across the state to prioritize guest safety. He emphasized the need for adequate and functional safety measures.

Additionally, the Commissioner appealed to the public for calm. He urged residents to refrain from speculation about the case. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses, he assured.

This tragedy highlights the critical importance of comprehensive pool safety protocols. Consequently, hotel operators must ensure proper supervision and emergency preparedness at all times.
