University Warns Against Unauthorised Use of Premises for Cinematographic Activities
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a formal directive restricting the unauthorised use of its premises and facilities for the shooting of videos, skits, films, and other cinematographic productions.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, the University expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals and groups—particularly content creators—engaging in filming activities within its premises without official approval.
Rising Concerns Over Unauthorised Filming
According to the notice, management’s attention was drawn to the increasing use of University spaces, including hostels and academic buildings, for various forms of video recordings and film productions.
The University noted that such unsanctioned activities have raised security, safety, and reputational concerns, and could disrupt the institution’s core academic environment.
“The University has established procedures guiding the use of its premises and environment for any form of recording or content production,” the statement read.
“These procedures are designed to ensure safety, decorum, and the integrity of our academic and residential spaces, as well as protect the image and reputation of the University.”
Approval Now Mandatory for All Shoots
UNILAG stressed that prior approval must be obtained before any form of recording or content creation takes place on campus.
The directive applies to students, staff, and external collaborators alike. Those intending to shoot any content are required to seek clearance from the Communication Unit located on the 7th Floor of the Senate House, Akoka.
The University further indicated that any production undertaken without proper authorisation would be deemed a violation of institutional policy and could attract sanctions.
Creativity Within Institutional Boundaries
While reaffirming its support for artistic and creative expression, the University emphasised that such activities must conform to institutional standards of responsibility and discipline.
“The University encourages creativity and responsible expression; however, such activities must align with established institutional guidelines,” the notice added.
“Members of the University community and the general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility.”
