Professor Samuel Asagba, the Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has shared exciting news. He spoke at a press conference ahead of the 18th convocation. He disclosed that “the Institution was ranked the best state university in Nigeria in 2025. Aside from that, he said the institution was also ranked the best in the South-east and South-south and 12th overall nationally in the same period.”
Soaring High: Rankings and Global Partnerships
This ranking is a major achievement. It is based on the Times Higher Education (THE) list for 2025. Many state universities across Nigeria were assessed for this ranking. Professor Asagba wants to build on this success. Therefore, he is deepening international partnerships. The university is strengthening collaboration with institutions in China, Canada, the USA, and South Africa. He noted, “They are ready to assist us in several areas. They have offered to train five of our staff, and this collaboration will enhance our visibility and improve our ranking.” Furthermore, DELSU has secured virtual international teaching engagements.
Building for Tomorrow: Infrastructure and Student Support
The university is tackling its accommodation problems. Responding to a question on the poor state of hostels, Prof Asagba gave an assurance. He stressed that “by the time students return for the new session, they will see noticeable changes.” Meanwhile, major interventions are coming from TETFund. These include N4 billion for a new Faculty of Engineering. Furthermore, N2.5 billion will upgrade the medical laboratories. Additionally, there are plans for 1,000-capacity hostels.
Consequently, student welfare is also improving. The university has expanded its work-study scheme. Consequently, 50 indigent students now earn N50,000. Additionally, school fees remain unchanged. This is considering the economic hard times assuaging most families. However, the VC expressed concerns over low uptake of the NELFUND loan scheme. Therefore, he charged students to take advantage of the opportunity. He also appealed for more sensitisation about the programme.
Navigating Challenges: Funding, Power, and Security
Despite these gains, Asagba identified key challenges. He listed funding constraints, security concerns, and epileptic power supply. Furthermore, he mentioned accreditation pressures, staffing gaps, and infrastructure maintenance. Nevertheless, the Delta State Government is providing support. Governor Sheriff Oborevwor’s leadership revived the long-abandoned Senate building project. They have also ensured prompt salary payments. Additionally, they implemented medical lecturers’ allowances.
Moreover, digital systems are now stronger. Upgraded CBT centres boast over 1,000 modern computers. This has improved efficiency. It has also curtailed malpractice, including transcript racketeering. Finally, the VC announced a fundraising campaign. This is for a modern sports complex. The university placed fourth at the last NUGA games. Therefore, this complex will support talent development and improve student wellness.
