The Kaduna State Government is set to transform its education landscape through a groundbreaking collaboration with the University of London. The planned Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will specifically link Kaduna State University (KASU) with the prestigious British institution. This partnership aims to strengthen distance and digital learning across the state.
A Strategic Engagement at RIDE 2026
The initiative follows a significant state-sponsored delegation to the United Kingdom. The high-powered team attended the 2026 edition of the Research in Distance and E-Learning (RIDE) Conference. According to the Commissioner for Education, Abubakar Sani Sambo, participants “engaged with global experts in digital, blended, and distance education”
The RIDE conference, hosted by the University of London, celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. It brought together over 450 delegates from 34 countries worldwide. The Kaduna delegation used this platform to showcase their work. They held strategic sessions with the University of London’s Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE), which is recognized as “a leading global hub” for digital learning innovation.
Prof Sambo noted that the engagement “provided an opportunity to showcase research work from KASU.” Consequently, it “opened pathways for institutional collaboration between both institutions”.
A Blueprint for Digital Transformation
The upcoming MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for cooperation. Specifically, the partnership will focus on building capacity in online and distance education. A central component involves “the deployment of a central Learning Management System (LMS) at KASU as a pilot for broader implementation”.
Furthermore, the initiative will prioritize human capital development. The commissioner explained that the programme includes “training academics in digital pedagogy and course delivery”. Additionally, the two universities will conduct “joint research and academic exchange programmes”. CODE will also provide “technical support for digital learning infrastructure” to ensure the project’s success.
A Validation of Ongoing Reforms
The participation at the RIDE Conference served as an important benchmark for Kaduna’s educational policies. The commissioner emphasized that the conference “validated ongoing reforms in Kaduna State’s education sector”. These reforms notably include “the expansion of hybrid learning models and computer-based testing systems”.
Furthermore, the conference recognized efforts to strengthen the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) through digital tools. According to Prof Sambo, the state’s adoption of flexible learning models “aligns with global best practices”. He added that this approach is particularly effective in “addressing the challenge of out-of-school children”.
The high-level Kaduna delegation included several prominent figures: Prof Sambo; the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science; the Vice Chancellor of KASU, Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa; Professor Bello Ayuba; Prof Yusha’u Ango; Prof Usman Abubakar Zaria; and Dr Fatima Shehu Kabir.
