A Lagos State University (LASU) student, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died after battling injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in Lagos.
The university confirmed his death in a statement issued on Thursday by its Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe. The incident has since thrown the university community into mourning.
University Mourns Fallen Student
Otabor, who bore matriculation number 240341269, was a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts.
Announcing his death, the university stated: “The Management of Lagos State University (LASU) received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph (Matric No. 240341269) of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.”
The institution further expressed sympathy to those affected by the tragedy.
“On behalf of the Management, staff, students, and the entire University community, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult and painful time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss.”
Attack Occurred Off Campus
According to information gathered by the university, the attack happened outside the campus.
The deceased and some friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers in the Iba area on Friday, May 29, 2026. The incident left Otabor with severe injuries.
Following reports of the attack, LASU activated support measures. The university, through the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately intervened.
Furthermore, the matter was escalated to the Vice-Chancellor. University officials also maintained contact with medical personnel handling his treatment. Throughout his hospitalization, the institution closely monitored developments.
Despite efforts to save him, Otabor died on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from complications arising from the injuries he sustained.
LASU Engages Family, Police, and Hospital Authorities
After receiving news of his passing, representatives of the university met with his family.
They also engaged officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and relevant law enforcement authorities.
Meanwhile, the university said it is working closely with security agencies investigating the attack. The goal, according to the institution, is to ensure accountability and justice.
The statement noted that LASU remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing the perpetrators to book.
Call for Justice and Final Tribute
As grief continues to spread across the university community, LASU reiterated its condolences to the bereaved family and all who knew the deceased.
“The University, again, condoles with the family and all who knew him and prays that the Almighty God will give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. We also pray that the soul of OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph rest in perfect peace. Amen.” The statement concluded.
The tragic death has renewed concerns about security in parts of Lagos. It also highlights the dangers posed by violent crime in surrounding communities. As investigations continue, many students and sympathizers are hoping those responsible will be identified and prosecuted.
