The University of Ibadan (UI) has reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s leading academic institution. This achievement comes in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026.
The rankings were published on Thursday on THE’s official website. UI secured placement in the 801–1000 global band. This marks a significant comeback for the institution, which last held this position in 2023.
A Comprehensive Global Assessment
The 2026 edition evaluated 2,191 universities from 115 countries worldwide. The assessment used 18 performance indicators across five critical areas. These areas include teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
The evaluation process was extensive and data-driven. It analyzed over 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications. Additionally, survey responses came from more than 108,000 scholars globally.
UI’s rise represents a remarkable turnaround from its previous standing. The university climbed from fourth position in Nigeria’s 2025 rankings. Consequently, it displaced Covenant University, which had dominated in 2024 and 2025.
Nigeria’s Top Universities Show Mixed Performance
Beyond UI, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) achieved notable success. It was the only other Nigerian institution in the global top 1000. UNILAG also ranked in the 801–1000 category.
Three universities secured positions in the 1001–1200 global band. These include Bayero University Kano (BUK), Covenant University, and Landmark University.
Each institution demonstrated particular strengths in different areas. UNILAG recorded the highest research quality score among Nigerian universities with 66.7. Meanwhile, Bayero University Kano led in international outlook. Furthermore, Covenant University ranked highest nationally for industry engagement. This reflects its strong collaboration with the private sector.
Several institutions fell within the 1201–1500 global band. These include Ahmadu Bello University, Federal University of Technology Minna, and University of Ilorin. The University of Jos and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, also appeared in this category.
Challenges Remain Despite Growing Participation
A larger group of universities appeared in the 1501+ category. This reflects ongoing challenges in global competitiveness. However, their inclusion in the rankings still represents recognition.
In total, 51 Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 rankings. Nevertheless, only two institutions, UI and UNILAG made it into the global top 1000.
The data reveals significant gaps in performance levels. Fourteen institutions were ranked in the 1501+ category. Additionally, 27 universities that submitted data were not ranked at all.

UI’s return to the top demonstrates the dynamic nature of academic excellence. The institution’s focus on research quality and teaching has clearly paid dividends. However, Nigerian universities collectively face significant challenges in achieving global competitiveness.
The rankings underscore the need for continued investment in research infrastructure. They also highlight the importance of international collaboration and industry partnerships. As these institutions strive for excellence, their performance will shape Nigeria’s academic reputation globally.
