More than 100 students of Lagos State University (LASU) are reportedly facing an extra academic year over alleged missing results.
The controversy began after a post on X accused a lecturer of failing to upload some students’ results. The post claimed that the affected students had completed their academic requirements.
According to the allegation, some of the results had been missing since the students were in 300 level. Despite complaints, the students were reportedly asked to “trust the process”.
The situation has now raised concerns over how administrative errors could affect students who have already completed their programmes.
Students Question Possible Extra Year
The viral post claimed that the affected students are now unable to graduate because of the unresolved results. As a result, some may have to remain in the university for another academic session.
The students reportedly insist that they did not fail the affected courses. Rather, they claim their results were not properly uploaded or processed.
For students who have spent years pursuing their degrees, the development has been described as heartbreaking. An extra year could mean additional academic expenses and a further delay in their plans after graduation.
The allegation has particularly attracted attention because of claims that the students could be required to pay additional fees if they remain in school.
However, there is no established evidence that LASU deliberately created the situation to generate additional tuition revenue. That claim remains part of the allegations circulating online.
LASU Responds to Viral Allegation
Following the growing attention, LASU Management acknowledged the allegation. In a statement shared on X, the university said it had become aware of the matter. Management added that the issue was currently being investigated.
“The attention of the University Management has been drawn to this allegation, and the matter is currently being looked into,” the university stated.
LASU further thanked those who brought the matter to its attention. The university’s response means the claims against the lecturer and other officials have not been established as facts. The outcome of the investigation will therefore be important in determining what actually happened.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that concerns over missing and inaccurate results may not be limited to the students currently facing graduation problems.
Some students have reportedly raised concerns about missing results, incorrect grades and conflicting course codes. These issues have added to the anxiety among students in the affected department.
‘Trust the Process’ Sparks Anger
The alleged response telling students to “trust the process” has become one of the most discussed aspects of the controversy.
Many X users questioned why students should bear the consequences of an administrative or academic error.
One user wrote: “A society where there’s no consequences for bad behaviour will never progress.”
Another described the alleged handling of the matter as “zero remorse, zero responsibility, 100% emotional blackmail.”
Other users expressed sympathy for the affected students. Some argued that losing an entire academic year could have serious consequences for their careers and personal plans.
There were, however, comments suggesting that the university should be allowed to complete its investigation before individuals are blamed.
The National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee in Lagos has reportedly joined calls for the matter to be resolved. Student representatives have urged the university to verify the affected students’ records.
For the students involved, the issue is bigger than a missing entry on an academic portal. Their graduation, national service plans, employment opportunities and further education could all be affected.
The controversy has therefore placed renewed attention on the importance of accurate academic record management.
If the investigation confirms that students completed their requirements but were delayed because of an administrative failure, questions will arise over who should bear the consequences.
For now, the students are waiting for LASU’s findings. Their demand is straightforward: if they have passed their courses and fulfilled the requirements for graduation, they should not lose an academic year because of an error they did not cause.
