Senate Acts on Reported Misconduct
The University of Calabar (UniCal) has suspended nine students after allegations of examination malpractice and result forgery. The decision was announced by the institution’s registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha. According to him, the action followed deliberations at the 252nd Senate meeting where reports were considered from two investigative bodies; the Ad-Hoc senate committee on examination malpractice and the senate students’ disciplinary committee.
After reviewing the committees’ findings, the university took decisive action. “After reviewing the reports and recommendations of the committees, the management resolved that the affected students should be suspended for two academic sessions and the suspension will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic year.”
Students Suspended and Reasons Given
Of the affected students, five were suspended for their involvement in examination malpractice. The others were found to have submitted forged results to the institution. Those suspended include:
1. Akwuba Enestina, 300 Level Pharmacy
2. Udom Iboro, 300 Level Pharmacy
3. Nwankwo Daniel, 200 Level Pharmacy
4. Ore Israel, 500 Level Pharmacy
5. Chisom Ejafa, 500 Level Pharmacy
6. Lazarus Ebogo, Home Economics
7. Ele Godwin, Zoology
8. Ofem Patrick, Science Laboratory Technology
9. Makailu Pamilo, Linguistics and Communication Studies.
Enforcement of the Suspension Order
To ensure the suspension is fully enforced, the university has taken further steps. Heads of departments and the deans of the affected faculties have been charged with implementation, along with the institution’s Acting Chief Security Officer.
This move highlights UniCal’s commitment to academic integrity and adherence to its disciplinary regulations. The strict measures also reflect broader concerns across Nigerian universities about malpractice and the protection of academic standards.
