What is the JAMB Cut-Off Mark
The JAMB cut-off mark is the minimal score required by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be eligible for post-UTME and admissions into tertiary institutions. It acts as a standard established by JAMB in partnership with educational authorities to control and ensure the admissions process is fair.
How does JAMB determine minimum cut-off marks?
Following each UTME, JAMB convenes a Policy Meeting to determine the National Minimum Tolerable UTME Score (NTMUS), also known as the cut-off score for Nigeria’s various levels of tertiary institutions. The policy meeting will be attended by university vice-chancellors, polytechnic rectors, and college of education provosts. Institutions can set their cut-offs higher than the agreed-upon minimum marks but not lower.

What is the JAMB cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 Academic Session?
From April 19 to 29, about 1.9 million candidates took the computer-based 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducts the UTME to rate candidates for admission to Nigerian higher institutions.
A breakdown of the candidates’ performances reveals that of the 1,842,464 released results, just 0.4% scored above 300. Twenty-four percent scored 200 or above, while 1,1,402,490 candidates, or 76 percent, scored less than 200 out of a possible 400 points.
Stakeholders and Nigerians described the performance as poor, given that more than 70% of the candidates got barely half of the total scores (400).
What, then, is the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 JAMB admissions?
The admissions body has announced the official JAMB cut-off mark for admissions into various tertiary institutions in the country.
JAMB imposed a minimum of 160 marks for university admission, with 120 for polytechnics and 100 marks for admission to colleges of education and innovative institutions, respectively.
Note that some universities may put their cut-off marks at 180, as they did in the past. The essential need is that their cut-off marks do not fall below JAMB marks.
Here are the approved JAMB cut-off marks for 2024 admission:

Specific JAMB Cut-Off Marks for Some Institutions
While the general guidelines are set by JAMB, each institution has the autonomy to determine its specific cut-off marks.
Here are examples of proposed cut-off marks from some universities for the 2024/2025 academic session:
- The University of Jos proposed a cut-off mark of 180 for admissions.
- The University of Ibadan, the University of Benin, and the University of Lagos proposed a cut-off mark of 200.
Other notable proposed cut-off marks include the University of Maiduguri (150), Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto (140), Pan Atlantic University (210), University of Lagos (200), Lagos State University (190), Covenant University (190), and Bayero University Kano (180).
Remember that these are just examples, and you should always check with your chosen institution for their specific requirements. JAMB’s minimum benchmark provides a starting point, but universities and other tertiary institutions may have additional admission criteria.
